American artist Peter Poulton. Poulton was one the most prominent artists to enter science fiction during the boom years in the 1950s. Poulton used a pen-and-ink method, as opposed to many artists who used grease pencil or wash. To achieve the desired effect, he used cross-hatching and stipple to shade. His work was reminiscent of Virgil Finlay in many ways. Poulton’s art was not as photographically realistic as Finlay’s, but it often had a lighter and more humorous feel. Poulton was a skilled artist in the handling of human figures, but he also did not hesitate to depict strange aliens and unusual machinery in his art. He was primarily an interior painter, but he also created several covers for Future Science Fiction.
